Boycott Summary

The calls to boycott Amazon.com centre around one thing: US Patent US596041 with which Amazon has tried to secure the “1-Click” ordering system it uses on this website. This didn’t start the boycott, but in 1999 they filed a lawsuit again one of their competitors, Barnes and Noble, for the breach of that patent. Although the lawsuit has now been settled, neither side has revealed the terms of the settlement so many people are calling for the boycott to continue.
There have also been claims that Amazon tried to thwart its employees’ attempts at forming a union, as well as some privacy concerns.

Editor’s Opinion

Although the patent is clearly ridiculous, I believe that part of the blame is on the US Patent Office for their complete incompetence when it comes to software patents, and also with the US courts for upholding the ludicrous patent. I still shop with Amazon because I personally think they offer an excellent service. However, there are a large number of alternatives to Amazon.com so I often check those out first to see if they offer a better price.
